Overview: LP Perspective On NE Political Parties

Explore the unique Libertarian perspective and compare it with other Nebraska Parties. While Libertarians focus on the individual, some generalizations can be drawn from the formal statement of values and policy positions of each party. The examples provided are not exclusive to registered voters' beliefs, and resources like the World’s Shortest Political Quiz can also help you identify your political philosophy.

The philosophy of Libertarianism embodies the principles of Liberty

Libertarians assert that respecting individual rights is the cornerstone for building a free and prosperous society. We believe that force and fraud must be eliminated from human interaction, as true peace and prosperity can only emerge from respecting liberty. We advocate for the right of every person to participate in any nonviolent and honest endeavor, embracing the richness that diversity brings through freedom. The society we aim to build allows individuals to pursue their aspirations in their own unique ways, free from governmental or authoritarian interference. Our core values are best described as peace, tolerance, free markets, limited government, and individualism, which are largely reflected in the Libertarian Party Platform.

The ideology of the Democratic Party is rooted in liberalism.

The national and state Democratic Party Platforms serve as comprehensive position statements that guide the party on key issues, ranging from climate change to gun safety, racial justice, and jobs.

In 2016 and again in 2020, the National Democratic Party adopted the most progressive and comprehensive platform, describing the ideas and values Democrats across our country hold. This progressive platform reflects the party's commitment to governmental control of the economy to steer it toward its ideal of creating a government that provides many services to all people.

The Nebraska Democratic Party Platform echoes this sentiment in their platform, affirming, “We believe Labor is the foundation upon which economic wealth is built, therefore… Labor has the right to an equitable share of the wealth they helped create” (Page 26, NEDP Platform).

The ideology of the Republican Party is rooted in conservatism.

Republicans largely advocate for individual liberty, economic growth, and preserving American values and traditions. However, many Republicans will staunchly defend government interference or action in the face of cultural or social issues. The party shows little consistency in defending privacy rights by supporting government agencies & policies that violate civil liberties, such as the TSA and unlawful FISA warrants. Republicans will also oppose government spending, but this is secondary to funding the military, and projects like the $2 Trillion F-35 are examples of the party embracing the sunk-cost fallacy as a result of hyper-fixating on national security.

The 2024 Republican Party Platform is largely the platform of their presidential candidate. It summarizes positions on border enforcement, trade protectionism, and reinforcing entitlements for American citizens, as opposed to immigration and foreign aid.

The ideology of the Legal Marijuana Now Party is rooted in Marijuana Legalization.

The official platform of the Legal Marijuana Now Party is the U.S. Bill of Rights. LMN party members are focused by hemp and marijuana legalization, and restitution for those who have suffered imprisonment or property theft from the State as a result of the war on drugs. The LMN Party also endorses the economic benefit that would come from job creation around hemp industrialization and a legal cannabis market. Libertarians wholly agree with these positions but disagree on the strategy of forming another party for a single issue.
